[ˊfi:nɪks] г. Финикс/Феникс, столица и крупнейший город штата Аризона. Считается «Лос-Анджелесом будущего», т.к. это самый быстрорастущий город восточнее Калифорнии: в 1960 его население было 439 тыс., к 1992 — 983 тыс. Главные отрасли промышленности — аэрокосмическая и электроника. Люди приезжают на Юго-Запад, и многие из них оседают в Финиксе и его окрестностях. Их привлекают прежде всего природа (город расположен на фоне Солнечной долины — Valley of the Sun) и чистый, без дыма и гари, воздух. Зимой здесь тысячи «зимних птичек» [snow-birds], приезжих из более холодных районов, предпочитающих проводить зимние месяцы в тёплых краях. Летом в городе царит сухая жара, и приезжие торопятся его покинуть.
